Taco supplies the Green Schoolhouse Series project with its LOFlo System and iWorx Controls to significantly reduce the heating and cooling system’s energy use
Taco, a leader in developing and manufacturing hydronic-based components for use in heating and cooling applications across the building spectrum, joins building partners, corporations, school districts and the community to build a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum designed schoolhouse on the campus of Roadrunner Elementary School in Phoenix, AZ.
The Green Schoolhouse Series is an initiative by leading partner Brighten a Life, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, in which schoolhouses are gifted to disadvantaged public schools. As a building partner, Taco will provide its LOFlo System and iWorx Controls, used in the hydronic cooling system to significantly reduce the flow of water.
“The Green Schoolhouse’s cooling system is the most efficient technology that can be installed in a commercial building today,” said Greg Cunniff, P.E., application engineering manager for Taco, Inc. The “business end” of the school’s cooling system will be Price chilled beams, and Taco LOFlo injection mixing system and iWorx controls.
“Use of chilled beams reduces the energy required by conventional system fans, required to move air, by a factor of up to ten times,” explained Cunniff. “Combined with Taco’s LOFlo – which ‘turbo-charges’ the energy efficiency of chilled beams – water flow is reduced by a factor of four. In this way, facility managers see overall electric energy savings of up to 40 percent when compared to traditional air systems.”
The LOFlo System and iWorx controls also provide precise regulation of supply water to the chilled beam, and precise control of room temperatures, lowering the heating and cooling costs for the school. This will keep energy use and costs for running low for the safari themed, state-of-the-art, sustainable schoolhouse.
“Through building partners like Taco donating their time and innovative products, we are all perpetuating the act of giving back and improving the lives of others,” explained Marshall G. Zotara, Co-founder of The Green Schoolhouse Series. “Not only will the students benefit from learning in a healthier, more comfortable classroom setting, the system that Taco is providing will lower the energy costs for the school for years to come.”
